हिताहितं सुखं दुःखमायुस्तस्य हिताहितम् । मानं च तच्च यत्रोक्तमायुर्वेदः स उच्यते ।।

समदोषः समाग्निश्च समधातुमलक्रियः । प्रसन्नात्मेन्द्रियमनाः स्वस्थ इत्यभिधीयते ।।

Ayurveda defines health as a condition in which there is quantitative / qualitative balance or equilibrium or homeostasis of Dosha (the three humors), Dhathu (the 7 vital components / building blocks), Agni (the 13 metabolic powers) Mala (the metabolic wastes / excrements) and wellness / pleasant state of soul, senses and mind.

निदाने माधवः प्रोक्तः सूत्रस्थाने तु वाग्भट्टः । शारीरे सुश्रुतः प्रोक्तः चरकस्तु चिकित्सते ।।

Madhava is the best for the detailed explanation about the etiology and diagnosis of the diseases. Vagbhatta gives the best explanation of basic principles and fundamentals of Ayurveda in Sutrastana. Sushruta's Sharira Sthana is famous for detailed description of human anatomy. Charaka is known for his Chikitsa Sthana where treatments are best explained.

आयुः कामयमानेन धर्मार्थसुखसाधनम् । आयुर्वेदोपदेशेषु विधेयः परमादरः ।।
